Townhouses are becoming an increasingly popular option for foreigners looking for a permanent or holiday home in Le Marche.
Maintenance costs are much cheaper and being in the heart of the village vistitors are much more likely to become a part of the community.
There is of course the added advantage of being closer to the bars and the restaurants. Nobody has to drive home!
Prices have unfortunately increased significantly during the last 2 years due to the increased demand, but bargains can still be found.
I live in the historic centre of Petritoli and when time allows I enjoy nothing more than just wandering around the village bumping into people or just watching the village tick by. Of course I also love strolling the 200m home from the restaurants after a wonderful meal, too much wine and "vino cotto" or "mistra".

This medieval hilltop village in the Ascoli Piceno province of Le Marche has a population of 2500. It is perched 360m above sea level on a hill overlooking one of the main river valleys. The village follows the typical pattern of this region with the main square at the top housing the clock tower, and the rest of the village stretching down below built against the rock face.
The views from the village stretch from the magnificent Sibillini mountains across the rolling Southern Le Marche hills, as far as the blue of the Adriatic sea. The surrounding countryside is typical of the area with vineyards, olive groves and fields of sunflowers giving it a truly Italian feel.
It hosts a range of shops, including butchers, bakers, newsagents, hardware stores, tobacconists, pharmacy,fresh pasta shop and mini markets, as well as a Bank and a post office. There are four restaurants and several bars and even a take away pizza shop. There is also a small theatre which is currently undergoing restoration and numerous churches and historical buildings.
There is a lively social calendar in the village particularly during the summer months when the village's population seems to double with the influx of italians from the main cities in search of a better quality of lifestyle.
The village is less than 20 minutes away from the coast and the delightful seaside resort of Pedaso. It is 35 minutes away from the Sibillini mountains. Both the main airports serving the region are within easy reach, Ancona airport an hour away and Pescara about 70 mins distant.

I knew as soon as I stood outside this house that it was going to be a very special property.

I return inside and make my way upstairs through the arched entrance of the stairway onto a small split landing. The stairs off to the right lead to another small landing and a bedroom. Intricate stucco details above the stairs are a beautiful feature indicating that this property was once a very fine home.
The stairs to the left lead onto a large landing with a stufo and large arched feature in the ceiling giving this space an open and elegant feel. From the landing doors lead to 3 further bedrooms all of which benefit from old cotto tiles, beamed ceilings and lovely double opening wooden doors.
Returning downstairs I make my way to the cellar. A window looks out onto the greenery beyond and I am taken to the back of this space to be shown a tunnel leading under neighbouring properties to a side street. - to bring the horse in!!

Its main traditional activities are the production of wine (including Rosso Piceno and Falerio), olive oil and fruit but also of pork meats, cakes, pastry and mushrooms. Its handicraft boasts the production of local artistic ceramics, the manufacture of gold and the restoration of wood and iron.
Sporting activities include football, tennis, basketball and motorcross.
Carassai has several bars and restaurants and celebrates several festivals and sagras throughout the year. There is a delightful park at the entrance to the village where the locals relax during the long hot summer days.
